About
Stories about people who turn what they love into what they do.
What is The Atria Journal?
The Atria Journal is an independent editorial publication about the people behind the work. Through long-form interviews across art, sports, fashion, health, and lifestyle, we explore how people started, what drives them, and who they are beyond their careers.
“Through interviews and conversations, we bring you closer to the people shaping art, sports, fashion, and everyday life, sharing the lessons they’ve learned along the way.”
— The Atria Journal Team
Each issue follows one person’s story. We talk about the work itself, the decisions behind it, and the experiences that have shaped their direction. These conversations give readers a chance to learn from lives and perspectives they might otherwise never encounter.
Meet the Editor
Aarna Patel is the founder and editor of The Atria Journal. She is a sophomore at Michigan State University, studying human biology through Lyman Briggs College on the pre-med track.
She started the journal with a belief that some of the most valuable lessons come from other people’s lives. Hearing how someone found their direction, worked through a mistake, or kept going can teach us something about our own.
“I hope every story gives you something to learn from another person’s life, something to think about, and something to carry into your own.”
— Aarna Patel, Founder & Editor
Through her interviews, she explores what people care about and why they have devoted so much of their lives to it. She hopes readers leave each conversation with something they can carry into their own lives: a useful lesson, a different perspective, or a possibility they had never considered.
Why Atria?
Atria takes its name from the heart’s upper chambers. It is the plural of atrium, chosen for its connection to the heart and the feeling of being excited about something—the kind of passion that gets your heart going.
The journal was originally imagined as a place for conversations with doctors and healthcare professionals. As its focus expanded into other fields, the name continued to fit. Passion remained at the heart of the stories it wanted to tell.
What We Look For
We look for people whose work makes us want to ask more questions. They might be an artist building a business, someone working behind a familiar brand, or a professional taking an unexpected direction within their field.
Across different careers, the common thread is a genuine connection to the work. We want to understand why they started, what keeps them going, and what their experience could teach someone else.
Some names may be familiar. Others may be people you would never have thought to interview. Each has a story worth spending time with.
Why We Do It
There is a lot to learn from someone who has lived through something you haven’t. Their beginnings, mistakes, and changing ambitions can offer a perspective you might not find on your own.
The Atria Journal makes room for those stories—and for taking the time to read them. We want readers to understand how a person’s work became part of their life, and what they learned along the way.
Someone else’s experience can change how you see your own.
The 1%
The 1% is often associated with financial wealth. At The Atria Journal, it represents another kind of wealth: the knowledge people build through their drive, passion, and experience.
That knowledge comes from years of doing the work, making mistakes, and finding a way forward. It shapes how someone thinks and what they can teach another person. Through these conversations, we want to make that wealth something readers can share in.
